In November 2006, the FDA approved silicone gel-filled breast implants for use by specially trained surgeons. Silicone gel-filled breast implants may be used on women who are at least 22 years old. Prior to the FDA's announcement, cohesive silicone gel implants ("gummy bear implants") could only be used for breast reconstruction patients, mastopexy-augmentation patients and previously augmented patients in need of a revision. Dr. Tyrone is approved to use these implants and is happy to offer them to appropriate patients. These new generation silicone-filled implants are made of a proprietary silicone gel formulation that holds its shape but remains soft, resulting in a more natural look and feel.

The most commonly asked question we receive about saline and silicone implants is: "Which is better?" The answer is "No single breast implant is perfect for everyone". Choosing the right type of breast implant can be a difficult decision. Generally, silicone implants may be a better choice for women with a lack of breast tissue where palpability of the implant may be a problem. Silicone implants have a more natural feel, and may also have a lower risk of rippling or wrinkling. For most women, saline breast implants are a safe and practical alternative.
